Liquid chromatography solutions for the food industry

Food analysis is essential to ensure product quality, execute regulations, and to comply with food standards, specifications, and labeling requirements.

High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is one of the most important methods in this field. With its wide range of column materials and detector types it can be used to analyze the composition, food additives, pesticides etc.

Quality control in food processing systems must be executed throughout the production chain from the start to the end including the stages of sales and distribution, as well as storage.

KNAUER offers solutions from sample preparation to HPLC analysis for food quality control.

Also, as one of the only companies on the market we are also able to provide our customers not only with high class with preparative HPLC solutions and continuous chromatography systems (SMB) for the purification of food additives or natural products.

  • Testing food for pesticides after sample preparation

The analysis of olive oil with HPLC is difficult due to the high molecular weight matrix. Here, a sample cleaning method for analyzing pesticide residues in olive oil in preparation for an HPLC analysis is described. Pesticides were separated from the oil matrix by size exclusion/gel permeation chromatography (GPC) according to US EPA SW-846 method 3640A.

AZURA® GPC Cleanup system automates work-intensive and time-consuming cleanup tasks based on gel permeation chromatography (GPC).

  • Green analysis of sugars with Eurokat columns and dedicated sugar analysis system

The application takes advantage of the high polarity of sugars. The separation takes place on polymer-based Eurokat columns. Not only are these columns extremely durable and resource efficient, they also allow the use of a simple isocratic method that uses water as the eluent. The sugars are detected by differential refractometry.

The dedicated AZURA® sugar analysis system is best suited for this application.

  • Separation of water-soluble vitamins

Examples for water soluble vitamins are vitamin C and the vitamin B complex: thiamin (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), vitamin B6, biotin (B7), folic acid (B9), cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12). In this work, eight water-soluble vitamins were separated and quantified in less than 10 min.

  • Natural or artificial? – Determination of vanillin and associated marker substances in vanilla products

Vanillin is one of the most popular flavouring agents used in various food products, beverages, as well as in the pharma and perfume industry. With a high demand for the supply of vanilla pods and the continuous increase in price, artificial vanilla flavouring agents of synthetic origin are nowadays highly requested.

The shown UHPLC method allows a first and fast quality control of vanilla products regarding the marker substances for synthetic or natural based extracts.

  • Oh so sweet - Quantification of steviol glycosides in Stevia samples with RP-HPLC

Steviol glycosides are the main sweetening compounds in Stevia rebaudiana and can be used as natural sugar substitutes.

This method provides a fast determination of six steviol glycosides using the AZURA® HPLC Plus System. With a fast separation under 10 min and an optimized gradient, the developed method is suitable for a fast quality control of stevia products.
