KNAUER at #ASMS2025 in Baltimore

From June 1-5, 2025 the 73rd ASMS Conference on Mass Spectrometry and Allied Topics took place in the “Charm City” of Baltimore, Maryland, USA, famous for its historic harbor, blue crabs, and being the birthplace of the U.S. national anthem. Five days packed with scientific exchange, and KNAUER Wissenschaftliche Geräte GmbH was there to talk about HPLC and high throughput applications.

What’s ASMS, and Why Were We There?

The ASMS conference is basically the “Super Bowl” of mass spectrometry. Over 6,000 students, scientists, and industry professionals from around the globe gathered at the Baltimore Convention Center to hear and discuss the latest findings and advancements in the field of mass spectrometry. Within 3,500+ presentations, including orals, posters and workshops, diverse topics ranging from fundamental mass spectrometry techniques to their applications in various fields such as proteomics, metabolomics, pharmaceuticals, and environmental science were covered.

For KNAUER this conference is not only an opportunity to showcase our modular HPLC and UHPLC systems, but also a chance to explore how our technologies can be utilized in LC-MS workflows and beyond.

KNAUER Highlights from the Conference

We had the pleasure to take part in this conference as an exhibitor. Our booth attracted a lot of interest, and we were thrilled to demonstrate how our products can enhance research and analytical capabilities.

Some of our highlights:

🎯 The New AZURA® HTQC System

  • We showed our new AZURA® HTQC UHPLC system, configured for High-Throughput Quality Control applications, featuring our liquid handler LH 8.1 for short cycle times and high sample capacity. Learn more about what this system can do in our recent blog post. Detailed information is also available on our website.

🧬 Our Own Science

  • Till presented a poster highlighting our recent advancements in analyzing the lipid content, identity and purity in lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) using HPLC-ELSD and HPLC-MS/MS. We demonstrated that a fast quality control of lipids used in LNP formulations can be achieved with a simple 2-minute isocratic method. Please check out the corresponding application notes here and here for more details. A special shout out to Mareike, who performed all the work in our lab.

🤝 New Connections and Familiar Faces

  • We enjoyed engaging in conversations with attendees, discussing our products and learning about their research challenges. We received a lot of positive feedback, and attendees were particularly interested in the versatility and ease of use of our systems as a mass spec front-end.
  • Of course, our I♥️HPLC merchandise was an eye-catching hit, especially for students. If you love it as much as we do but won’t make it to a tradeshow this year, you can also get the merch here.

Cool Science We Loved (Besides Our Own)

🦀 Exploring Edible Biodiversity

  • Dr. Selena Ahmed from the Periodic Table of Food Initiative (PTFI) gave a compelling plenary lecture, emphasizing the importance of mapping the planet’s edible biodiversity to enhance food quality and nutrition.

🚀 Space Meets Spec

  • NASA’s Melissa Trainer gave a keynote on the Dragonfly mission to Saturn’s moon Titan, featuring – you guessed it – mass spectrometry for analyzing “space” molecules.

🏆 Recognizing Excellence in LC-MS

  • Dr. Jack Henion received the John B. Fenn Award for his significant contributions to LC-MS technology, particularly in atmospheric pressure ionization. Despite LC-MS history, his lecture underscored the importance of collaboration in driving scientific breakthroughs.

🧪 Hot Topics this Year

  • Over 100 contributions focused on PFAS analysis, exploring ways to determine these “forever chemicals” in various matrices. Another hot topic was Proteomics, where AI-powered peptide analysis, spectrum prediction, and data-independent acquisition (DIA) workflows were presented. Now, our application lab knows the next steps to take with our instruments.

Final Thoughts

The ASMS conference in Baltimore gave us more than just crabs  and sunshine – it reminded us why we do what we do. From life sciences to environmental analysis, liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry are the perfect couple in analytical sciences, and we at KNAUER remain committed to delivering modular, smart, and sustainable LC solutions.

A big thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth. It was a pleasure to meet you, and we look forward seeing you all again next year in San Diego, California for #ASMS2026.

Whether you missed ASMS or just want to chat about how our systems can integrate into your LC-MS workflow, please feel free to reach out to us or meet us at the next tradeshow – and yes, we’re bringing 🍫 German chocolate.
