Simulated moving bed (SMB) chromatography saves time and money in the lab
Simulated moving bed chromatography (SMBC) is increasingly applied as a separation technique in the pharmaceutical industry, production of fine chemicals, and in the field of bioengineering.
SMB is a multi-column method in process chromatography that enables substance mixtures to be continuously separated and extracted in two fractions. Its efficiency is significantly higher than batch chromatography, through better utilization of the column stationary phase.
Although in principle limited to two fraction separations, each partial fraction can be separated into further fractions by repeated use of the SMB process – down to binary substance mixtures.
Typically, the SMB process is used for two component mixtures, like chiral separations or mixtures with a "leading" or a "trailing" key product peak in the chromatogram.

Stainless Steel Configuration
The AZURA Lab SMB System is optimized for the multicolumn separation of binary mixtures of small molecules in gram-scale. The SMB System A29101 is the standard stainless steel configuration of our AZURA Lab SMB series. It consists of seven 8-multiposition valves and four AZURA P 4.1S included in four Assistants ASM 2.2L. The high pressure range as well as the flexibility of the multiposition valves make this system the perfect solution for SMB chromatography.
Biocompatible Configuration
The AZURA SMB Bio Lab System enables efficient multicolumn separation of binary mixtures, making it ideal for purifying small molecules and biomolecules on a gram-scale across the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, food, or chemical industries. The SMB System A29100 features seven 8-multiposition valves and four AZURA P 4.1S pumps within four ASM 2.2L Assistants. Its high-pressure capability, biocompatibility, and flexible valves make it perfect for applications such as enantiomer separations, as well as the purification of sugars and fine chemicals.

System and Process Control:
- Coriolis flow meter – Includes integrated temperature and density measurements.
- Sampling valve – Simplifies product outlet extraction with minimal hold-up volume.
- Inline sampling valve – Allows sample collection at any cycle position of the SMB process.
Precise Monitoring of the SMB Cycle with Detectors:
- Refractive index detector – Suitable for alcohols, sugars, lipids, and more.
- Compact UV detector – Supports a wide range of flow cells; also available as a remote flow cell variant.
- Conductivity monitor – Features a biocompatible flow cell for flow rates up to 100 ml/min.
Heating and Column Organization:
- Oven for AZURA® SMB Lab – Heats up to eight KNAUER columns (max. 250 × 50 mm inner dimension) to temperatures up to 80°C.
- Column holder – Accommodates up to eight SMB columns (max. 250 × 50 mm).
