Note to recommended setup: KNAUER recommends a suitable setup for your scale-up process, considering the optimal fit between IJM, system configuration, and flow rate. Even if the recommended IJM differs from the target IJM, similar particle qualities can be expected. To achieve comparable flow conditions, a corresponding minimal flow rate must be ensured. Flow rates equal to or slightly higher than this usually result in consistent particle sizes and quality. The customer may proceed to use the calculated scale-up parameters; however, maximum system operating limits, such as pressure and flow rates, must always be observed.
1. Find Your Target Flow Rate
In this section, you enter your desired total flow rate (TFR) in mL/min. Once entered, all IJM types compatible with the selected TFR will be listed in the Setup Table.
The table also indicates which device the IJM belongs to:
NanoScaler → for lower TFR ranges
NanoProducer → for higher TFR ranges
This overview helps you to quickly identify suitable IJMs for your target flow conditions.
2. Scale TFR from one IJM to another
This feature helps you calculate the matching TFR for a different IJM type. To do so, enter:
- The current IJM type
- The current TFR in mL/min
- The target IJM (1–7)
The tool will automatically calculate the corresponding TFR for the selected target IJM, using internal correction factors. This helps ensure consistent mixing conditions when switching between IJMs.

Please note that the recommendations and scaling calculations provided here are based on standard device setups as defined in the system instructions: If your setup deviates from these specifications (e.g. custom capillaries), results may differ and should be interpreted with caution. Keep in mind that product characteristics and system behavior can be influenced by several factors:
- Capillary dimensions: Changing the inner diameter or length of the capillaries can affect pressure and mixing performance.
- Lipid and API composition: Both the lipid formulation and active ingredients impact the resulting particle properties.
- TFR ratio (organic:aqueous): The chosen mixing ratio affects both the LNP characteristics and the occurring pressure experienced by the individual pumps.
- Quench step: Quenching leads to an instant dilution of the LNP solution after formulation and will influence the size of your particles.
