DC with GC – Determination of catecholamines in plasma with electrochemical detection

Epinephrine (adrenaline), norepinephrine (noradrenaline) and dopamine are termed as catecholamines. The determination of catecholamines is primarily used to help detect and rule out pheochromocytomas in symptomatic patients, i.e. in patients with persistent hypertension. It is also used in order to help monitor for recurrence when a pheochromocytoma has been detected and removed1. Applying HPLC coupled to electrochemical detection with direct current (DC) using a glassy carbon (GC) working electrode makes it possible to detect even lowest amounts of catecholamines in urine or plasma samples.
