KNAUER Advanced Scientific Instruments

KNAUER Smartline - HPLC by design

KNAUER's Smartline series of HPLC instruments combines three decades of experience in designing and manufacturing HPLC systems with the most up-to-date technology, resulting in one of the most compact HPLC systems on the market with many ingenious design features.

Small footprint HPLC

Only 22 centimeters wide, a Smartline HPLC tower requires just a small amount of your valuable bench space. The well thought out design not only saves space, but also reduces dead volume - an absolute must for short analysis times in narrow-bore HPLC.

Attractive look - practical design

The swivel-mounted front panel on each LC module conceals sensitive elements such as the pump head, detector flow cell, as well as capillaries and tubings. This design feature is not only for aesthetic purposes, but also provides for better protection while allowing easy access to protected components.

Precision HPLC solvent delivery system

KNAUER's solvent delivery technique is known for pulse-free flow without the need for classic pulsation dampening devices, which would add undesired extra column volume to the system. This is achieved through a combination of a highly precise mechanism and a "smart" drive control which we simply term "electronic residual pulsation dampening". Many well-known HPLC manufacturers (our OEM customers) rely on KNAUER pump technology for their own high performance systems. The technical design of KNAUER's Smartline HPLC instruments has been optimized for the highest possible longevity of each component. Active piston seal wash, a standard feature in the Smartline Pump 1000, is a perfect example of this design philosophy. It not only provides peace of mind to chromatographers who work with concentrated buffers but also helps to decrease maintenance costs and extends the pump's lifespan as well. Smartline HPLC pumps can also be easily upgraded at any time to form quaternary gradients, by adding a low pressure gradient module or by adding one or more pumps for high pressure gradients - providing true modularity. All models are also available in a biocompatible version with titanium pump head and flow path.

Smartline Pump 1000 isocratic HPLC system, flow rates from 0.001 to 9.999 (max. 400 bar, 5800 psi) or 0.01 to 50.00 ml/min (max. 150 bar, 2180 psi), depending on type of pump head
Smartline Pump 1000 + Smartline Manager 5000 low pressure gradient HPLC system, quaternary, flow rates from 0.001 to 9.999 (max. 400 bar, 5800 psi) or 0.01 to 50.00 ml/min (max. 150 bar, 2180 psi)
2, 3, or 4 Smartline Pump 1000 high pressure gradient HPLC system (for most accurate gradient formation), up to quaternary gradients possible, flow rates from 0.001 to 9.999 per pump (max. 400 bar, 5800 psi) or 0.01 to 50.00 ml/min per pump (max. 150 bar, 2180 psi)
The table above demonstrates the modular concept of the Smartline HPLC systems by showing possible configurations (isocratic, gradient) and their flow rate ranges and maximum pressure values. The max. flow rate values are identical to the respective HPLC pump head size.

HPLC detectors for almost any application

Smartline HPLC detectors work with approved KNAUER flow cells available for a wide range of flow rates, allowing KNAUER's Smartline detectors to be used in HPLC systems running at microliter flow rates as well as flow rates of up to 10 liters per minute. Another special feature of KNAUER's photometric detectors is the option to position the flow cell remotely from the instrument by using fiber optics. This option allows for interesting possibilities such as thermostatted measurements directly at the column outlet for minimal peak broadening or measurements in hazardous environments.

Flexible HPLC system control

Smartline HPLC instruments can be controlled either directly from the touchpad display or via our modern and fully network capable ChromGate® LC software. Based on the well-known EZChrom kernel, the ChromGate® chromatography data system implements GLP functions and complies to FDA 21 CFR Part 11 regulations.
